In a country where more than 1 lakh freshers/high-skilled are consumed by the IT services companies, talking about Logistics and Supply Chain do create interest but not so much ... Logistics and transportation in India is still considered to be a Railway Officers job or the local transporter found across the country. We do have a lot of organised private players but their need is limited. Recent study by a large consultancy puts requirement of Logistics professional to the tune of 4.3 Million by 2012-13 . Thats huge considering we do not have specific/dedicated institutes to teach people nor the freshers/prospective students have the visibility of the kind of opportunity that awaits them . problem lies with the lack of initiative taken by the indian Industry and the lack of skilled professionals who can teach the students.
Of course each MBA school has its own SCM course in one Trimester or may be two but there are very few who teach complete end to end SCM to students.. who can become prospective warehouse managers, freight forwarders and solution consultants. Gone are the days where you have to put multiple hours after your work schedule to make things work, coz this sector is now so closely connected to the IT world that things are getting easier day by day.
I think the time now to tap the potential of the 10 lakh people who graduate every year and look for jobs. Lets get started early and make them aware even if 10% of them see a future in this .. i say y not...
Its time to act
